Emerging Leaders Support Contemporary Dance Theatre in Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge has so much to offer… great universities, a supportive environment for emerging business leaders, and a vibrant cultural scene. Of Moving Colors (OMC) is one of the pillars of our arts and culture community, as the only contemporary dance company in the area. They are a home for local dancers to practice their craft, a community space for inspiring burgeoning performers, and a wonderful opportunity for South Louisiana residents to enjoy world-class productions.Members of our leadership workshops, the Resilient Leadership Series and Management Incubator, were honored to partner with Of Moving Colors to help them solve a strategic challenge and refresh their practice space. This partnership gave our emerging leaders an opportunity to put their skills to practice, and provide tangible benefits to a community institution. To learn more, read about the Success Labs LAB Grant initiative.LeeAnn Kozan, the Executive Director of Of Moving Colors Productions, put it simply: OMC’s overarching mission is to provide beauty to the community, and in order to do that effectively, they needed to accomplish a couple of things:Build OMC’s brand in the Baton Rouge business community, in order to continue to attract seasoned, committed board members.Refresh their practice studio, so the dancers will have an inspiring place to bring new creative productions to Baton Rouge.“A large portion of Baton Rouge doesn’t know we exist,” LeeAnn said, discussing OMC’s need to build awareness in the community. “However, everyone who comes to our shows leaves feeling impressed, happy, and more aware about something that’s good in our community.”

From Conception to Implementation

The Resilient Leadership Series class honed in on the need to present OMC to potential board members, creating multiple tools that staff can use to strategize and market the organization to new sectors. Management Incubator participants spearheaded a refresh of the OMC practice space, to better serve and inspire the performers. The tools the Resilient Leadership Series created to better attract and serve board members included a Board Member Selection Matrix; and a set of recommendations for investing in the development of both young and senior professional board members. The class also created a pitch that presents OMC’s strengths as an organization in order to attract people who want to be involved in building up a unique offering in our community. The Management Incubator class was successful in bringing in donated supplies, and even the services of a volunteer electrician, to transform OMC’s practice space using lights, paint, and textiles. Even though the studio is shared with another organization, the space is now the perfect canvas for the creation of new productions… some of which involve guest residencies from New York and Vienna.Of Moving Color’s goal is to continue to build on the foundations they have to bring incredible programming to Baton Rouge. Success Labs, along with the talented emerging leaders in our workshops, was very thankful to be a part this goal.
