Just Do It: Building a People Strategy for the Future
Over the past few weeks I’ve been thinking a lot about what 2023 will have in store for our teams, organizations, and overall business environment. While we can’t foresee every curveball 2023 will throw at us, I do have a few predictions that I’m confident will play a big role in how businesses operate over the coming year. These predictions are all based on one undeniable fact: the past few years have brought many changes to the culture of work, and we can expect those changes to continue to impact our people strategies — while presenting new opportunities to cultivate more resilient, agile, and people-focused organizations. In order to seize these opportunities, organizations must be prepared to JUST DO IT: build a people strategy for the future by understanding and acting on the key issues affecting your people and teams. Here are my 2023 people strategy predictions, with my advice on how to positively act on the opportunities that these key areas present.
Prediction 1
Big questions around organizational culture and practices aren’t going away, and will continue to impact your people in 2023. These questions include —
Issues around work/life balance and burnout.
Figuring out the limits, benefits, and “how to” of remote work.
Attracting, retaining, and investing in top talent and high-quality teams.
Building a company culture that prioritizes Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.
Opportunity For Your People Strategy
Understand that these questions are impacting how people view their roles, their career trajectory, job movement, etc. This is an opportunity to take these questions seriously by embarking on a Great Renegotiation with your people. It is a process designed to give your people, and your business, the best chance at success by bringing employees to the table and collaborating towards a win/win outcome for everyone concerned. Seize this moment by having a conversation with your people about their needs and the value they bring to your organization:
Where do they want their careers to go, and what skills do they need to get there?
What do they need in order to perform at their highest level?
Is there alignment between salary/benefits, market rates, and organizational values and purpose?
Can you figure out a plan for moving forward, together?

Prediction 2
In 2023 great companies will need to be HEADS UP – this is no time to be caught “paws up.” Being “heads up” means leaning into tough conversations and new ideas, and being open to change and innovation in your people strategy at all levels.
Opportunity For Your People Strategy
In addition to conducting a Great Renegotiation, learn how to future-proof your mindset by focusing on the 4 P’s: Perspective, Purpose, Partnership, and Problem Solving.
This matrix helps you work from a mindset of strengthening your people and culture so that your teams and organization are agile, resilient, and able to absorb and respond to shifts and challenges as they arise. Learn more and apply the principles of the 4 P Matrix here.
Prediction 3
In 2023 companies will need to work to differentiate themselves from organizations that are too slow, unresponsive, and ineffective for today’s dynamic business environment.
Opportunity For Your People Strategy
Make your organization stand out and above the others by harnessing the power of resilience and agility to become a JUST DO IT organization. These concepts aren’t just buzzwords… there are actions steps you can take to help your business better absorb and process disruptions, challenges, or new information; and simultaneously become the kind of organization that can quickly and easily take action in the face of volatility. It’s easier than you might think — learn more about actively building resilience and agility here.
There you have it: my three predictions for 2023, with three opportunities to establish a stronger, more successful foundation for your organization.
